Background on Ethics, Principles and Moral code – Our road to VALUES

The word “ethical” relates to moral principles, while the word “moral” is concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior. Ethics in work environment therefor means that one’s way of working is guided by a moral code determined by right and wrong. There is a right way of doing things – but evenly so there is a wrong way. To maintain a high moral code is what we would like in everything we do, thus doing the right thing. What is seen as right/wrong from our perspective is determined by how we see ourselves regarding identity, orientation and values.

Real VALUES is never monetary and never exist in a vacuum. It is much more than a few words with the right sound, but is based on a spiritual orientation (“Where do we fit into the bigger scheme of things?”). Being spiritually orientated leads to a spiritually based sense of identity (“Who am I? OR Who are we?”). We are made what we are. Not only are we given a new identity by God – but we are also given the Bible (as highest authoritive norm) containing the criteria needed to test our beliefs, values, thought processes and ways of conducting ourselves. We do not see the Bible as direct word of God, but as word of people about God (of which nobody knows what to call Him – the One that Paul described in Acts 7:23 as “…UNKNOWN GOD”). For us a set of values are therefore part of a fairly involved process, and the result is much more than a few words having very little meaning on its own. The figure below show the continuous process we go through to get to the values we are willing to die for.
